While Cincinnati continues to evolve as a people and place, we realize that change is a constant in our everyday lives. It is however, only since the mid-20th century, that we have seen such drastic alterations to our cities and neighborhood streetscapes. As untold numbers were up-rooted during this period of freeway construction and so-called urban renewal, our sense of place as a people has faced challenges never before seen on such a scale.

With this constant change, it is that much more fascinating to know what came before. We welcome you to view examples of then and now photographs, side by side, along with amazing glimpses into the city's urban past that confidently stand on their own.

This informative collection of vintage Cincinnati images put together by Alex Bell and Christopher Smith, spans more than a century of time and captures many long-gone places in the proud history of the old city on the banks of the Ohio.
