Mercantile Library - Cincinnati Ohio
On Fourth Street looking north up Walnut, you see the Mercantile Library Building on the right, built in 1911. Just beyond it is the Traction Building that went up in 1902. This photo dates to the mid-1920s. The Mercantile is the oldest library west of the Allegheny Mountains and occupies the entire 11th Floor with an additional reading room just above on the 12th floor. The library has been at this location since 1845 in three different structures. They do, in fact, have a ten thousand year lease at one dollar per year for the twelve hundred square feet of space.
